We’ve recently started work on a blog to support Toyota’s launch of its iQ city car in the UK.
The official Toyota iQ blog; This is iQ aims to gather up the most interesting content and commentary about the car and the activities surrounding its launch.
It’s a great project to be involved in. The tiny iQ recently scooped a design award, and romped home with Car of the Year Japan – receiving twice as many votes as its nearest rival. There’s a fair bit of speculation about it reaching the US under Toyota’s Scion marque, or even appearing as a convertible in time for 2009’s Tokyo Motor Show.
iQ went on sale in Japan yesterday. In the run up to its launch we’ve seen it driven up buildings, and even cropping up in the Japanese online world meet-me.
We’re hoping for similar antics to write about in the run up to iQ’s UK launch on 6 January 2009.

You know, I have to tell you, I really enjoy this blog and the insight from everyone who participates. I find it to be refreshing and very informative. I wish there were more blogs like it. Anyway, I felt it was about time I posted, I

I’ve had my new iQ for a month and, whilst I basically like it, it’s a flawed genius: it has the longest list of minusses in a car I’ve ever aencountered in the last 50 years. One of the things I most dislike about the beast is it’s dangerously comptromised driver’s over-the-shoulder view and that staupidly weeny steering wheel stero button. Also: according to the computer, I’m only getting 50 mpg. Allowing for comoputer error, that prob means I’m only getting about 45 mpg. Unacceptable!

Good idea this blog as you cant comment on the official one. Does anyone know when the Scion kit is coming to the UK? I’ve emailed IQ Central but they are unsure? http://www.toyotaiqcentral.com/news/Scion-IQ-Concept-Toyota.htm

@David Huges – That’s a shame. I’m one of the two iCrossers that took the iQ out for the iQ economy attempt, and - while we only did about 650 miles in it – we didn’t find much we didn’t like. We never got to the bottom of why the computer’s fuel economy reading wouldn’t go above 60mpg, but we honestly found it easy to keep it there, particularly on dual carriageways.
After we filled up in Oxford we headed straight back to Brighton in a hurry, through some fast (ahem) motorway driving on the M40 and M23, punctuated by congestion on the M25. It was dark, and tipping it down for much of the journey, but we got an indicated 48.7mpg.
@David – I’ve just checked and comments do seem to be working on the iQ blog, which is in the process of becoming the Toyota UK blog. Please try to comment there again. Comments are moderated, but let us know if it doesn’t appear within a day or two.

Just completed first 1000 miles in the IQ – performance and fuel economy improving all the time. Paid for JBL premium sound upgrade – DON’T BOTHER – it’s all bass or all treble, not at all what I expected.
Agree radio controls are rubbish BUT….. has anyone else experienced an unacceptably uncomfortable drivers seat base? It’s like sitting on a basketball – hard foam down the middle with softer foam on either side, so it doesn’t grip you well round corners and it is, quite literally, a pain in the arse!

You cannot compare the toyota iq to traditional cars and expect this to either outperform or match the features. This car is designed for city life – nice little car to get about in the city, that’s it!

Have just picked up my Iq and am having to learn to love it.
Over shoulder visibility poor.
Interior light poor and no light in rear space.
Radio controls poor.
Biggest problem for me, cover for rear storage space works well from the back but from the front all stored items are on show. Can’t leave anything in car.

Also, has anyone stalled their Iq and found it won’t restart without switching everything off and starting from scratch? What’s all that about?

Hi everyone – please note that we just work with Toyota on its blog. You’re welcome to leave comments here about the car, but much better to leave them on the Toyota blog itself.
Toyota actively monitors and responds to comments it receives there so you’re much more likely to receive an authoritative response. You’re also more likely to find many more Toyota owners with whom you can compare notes.
