Gangnam style to hit the billion before Christmas

Nov. 26, 2012 | by Gregory Lyons

Popular music video Gangnam Style recently overtook Justin Beiber’s video baby to become the number one most viewed video on Youtube ever. With it hitting this milestone so quickly (in just over four months) we thought it would be interesting to calculate if and when it might hit another milestone, the billion views mark.

Looking at the view growth over the past few months we can see that growth has remained quite linear, adding an additional 100 million views every 11-12 days! Assuming growth remains at this level for the next few week we can assume that PSY’s Gangnam Style will become the first ever video on youtube to be viewed over a billion times and will hit this milestone a week before Christmas.

It is reasonable to assume that interest in the video will wane over time and therefore this growth will slow. However even if this occurs, historically Youtube always gets a boost in traffic volume over the Christmas period so if growth did slow, the Christmas boost should certainly help it hit the billion.
