Facebook has hit the BILLION!

Oct. 04, 2012 | by Gregory Lyons

This morning Facebook announced that on the 14th of September 2012 they finally hit the Billion active user mark.  Unfortunately this does make me 14 days out in my August prediction but an impressive feat by Facebook nonetheless.  Alongside the announcement they released a number of impressive stats.

  • 219 billion photos uploaded
  • 1.13 trillion likes
  • 140.3 billion friend connections
  • 17 billion location-tagged posts
  • 600M mobile users

The top 5 countries remain unchanged since we last looked at the data and are in order of number of users

1) USA
2) Brazil
3) India
4) Indonesia
5) Mexico

Interestingly, over time the average age of a Facebook user has been decreasing going from 26 year old in 2007 to 22 in 2012. This is perhaps due to the increased use in emerging markets where users are likely to be younger.

Myspace was a very popular social media choice for teenagers all over the globe. With the constant patching and updating of Myspace many users converted over to Facebook to avoid it's tedious loading times and over complicated user interface . This probably contributed to the decrease in average age figures for Facebook.Oct 4, 2012 12:45 pm
